ISCA Con 24

I just returned home from the 24th annual International Society of Caricature Artists Convention and Competition held in Sandusky, Ohio. Every year, for one week, caricaturists from around the world gather in a hotel ballroom and draw each other for four days straight. There are workshops, guest speakers and many competitions for the opportunity to take home a trophy.

This year, I was thrilled to win first place in the Speed Competition for the title of World's Fastest Caricaturist! I also had a blast pushing myself and trying out a variety of drawing styles for my competition wall. Here are some images of my wall and subjects.

SubPar at ALMA Lights

Alma Lights was a collaboration between Northern and Restaurant Alma to create a temporary arts hub experiment that supported a range of artist interventions at 528-530 University Ave. in Minneapolis prior to Restaurant Alma’s renovation of the building in the fall.

As Restaurant Alma plans with James Dayton Design how to reconfigure the space with expanded restaurant facilities, a cafe and boutique hotel, Northern invited a number artists to create interventions, installations, and activities throughout the building between July 8 and September 15.For my intervention, I created SubPar, a mini golf ball run that had three starting points on the second level, went through the floor and ended downstairs. It was constructed primarily of raw building materials and a number of objects found throughout the space including metal lampshades, HVAC tubing and an orange traffic cone.

CNC Woodblock Workshop at Central Michigan University

On April 9th and 10th, I was invited to teach a CNC Router Woodblock Printmaking workshop at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. In just two days, we CNC routed 9" x 12" images out of MDF for 13 students. I had fun meeting everyone, troubleshooting the ZenBot and helping the students bring their intricate images to life. Thanks to Johanna Pass and the rest of the CMU crew for having me!

Love Where You Live Tourism Award

Back in February I was asked to create a trophy for a dog named Stout. Stout is a black lab and the unofficial mascot of R.J. Rocker's Brewing Company here in Spartanburg, SC and he is this year's recipient of the Love Where You Live Tourism Award. So I took an old gumball machine that needed some TLC and transformed it into a dog-treat dispensing trophy!

Tasmeem 3ajeeb!

I just returned from my second trip to Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar in Doha for Tasmeem 3ajeeb! It was an amazing week filled with unique workshops and inspiring speakers from around the globe. Tom and I went as A Couple of Putts and led a 3 day workshop where we built a 10th mini golf hole to add to the course that we helped the students design last fall. We also gave a talk on our mini golf work.

The hole was inspired by a classic jump shot in combination with Doha's iconic Pearl. We came with a basic design and let the students customize it. We love the direction they took it! Here are some images of our process and the final hole.

Original concept for the hole.
Test playing with amazing matching shoes!

Hub-Bub Entry Show

Starting January 5th and ending June 28th, I am one of four Artists-in-Residence at Hub-Bub in Spartanburg, SC. At the end of January, Jenny, Anna, Desiree and myself were showcased in The Entry Show, a late-night talk show style event introducing us to the city. This is the first year in the history of Hub-Bub that all four AiRs are women, so we decided to play that up by turning The Entry Show into a fictional beauty pageant called Miss Sparkle City. For this event, I created all the signage, the grand entrance, the sashes and brought the couch to life. We had so much fun and I feel very welcomed by the Spartanburg community!
